7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---
Last Saturday was crazy. We had so many functions to attend. It started with both of my boys' 1st basketball games of the season. Both of their teams won. This is actually Garrett's first time to ever play basketball, and he did really well. I'll have to get some pictures next time. I was too busy cheering for my babies to take pictures. I'll have to remember to take some this Saturday.

EJ, our Elf, hasn't been moving around every night. I really don't know what's up with that.

What the Heck Wednesday

Pardon my whining in this post, but do you realize there are only seven days until Christmas (six shopping days).  SIX!! I am in panic mode now.  I've completed a great deal of my shopping.  Now I have the difficult gifts left to buy.  The gifts with which I struggle.  You know, the gifts for my husband and sons, just to name a few.

7 Quick Takes Friday

Do you realize there are only 11 shopping days until Christmas. Aaaaaah!! I'm not ready.

My boys have promised me they will all be in the kitchen with me tonight helping me bake. I feel certain they'll bail on me after about 30 minutes.

What the Heck Wednesday

I think I mentioned last week that I'm really having difficulty finding the "Holiday Spirit" this year.  I'm really not feeling it.  I don't know why.  Even EJ, our Elf on a Shelf, is lacking in motivation. He finally showed up this past weekend, and he's only moved twice since then.

What the Heck Wednesday

Well, it's that time.  Wednesday.  Again.  Not sure what the next few days will bring.  Although the last several days have been very warm, temperatures Thursday are expected to plummet and a Winter Storm Warning has already been issued for the remainder of the week.

What the Heck Wednesday

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and  I know many people who decorate for Christmas either just prior to Thanksgiving or before their Thanksgiving leftovers are even cold.  Me?  Well, if it wasn't for my kids, I probably wouldn't even mess with a tree.  I'd get a little table-top tree, and that would be the extent of it. Yeah, "Bah Humbug!"  That's me.  However, I do have kids which means I have to put up a tree at the very least.

7 Quick Takes Friday - Dirty Socks & Spiders

I'm so thankful it's Friday. Nothing out of the ordinary happened this week, it was just a busy one as usual.
Have any of you started your Christmas shopping? I've only bought one gift at this point. I'm going to be in a mad-dash over the next few weeks. I can't believe Christmas is so close already. Where has this year gone?

What the Heck Wednesday

I'm sad.  I saw something the other day that was so hideous, I thought to myself that I HAD to share it on WTHW.  It's now Wednesday, so, guess what?  I can't remember for the life of me what I wanted to talk about  UGH!  Getting old STINKS!

Shoot!  Back to square one....

What the Heck Wednesday

The weather has turned really cold here.  This morning when we awoke it was 29 degrees.  Brrrrr!  I don't care who you are, unless you live in the Alaskan Yukon or Antarctica, 29 degrees is cold.  It's especially cold for us southerners.  I don't even think that factored in the wind chill, and the wind was whipping.

7 Quick Takes Friday

Another crazy week is in the books.  Yay!
Monday I went to the allergy clinic for my 2nd year testing.  Thankfully the allergy shots appear to be working.  Oak, which I had a fairly significant reaction to last year, didn't even appear on the radar this year.

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Swirl Bars

I originally shared this recipe back in October of 2012, along with various other goodies.  But, well.... it's Fall and yep, those pumpkin cravings are back.  So, I thought I'd share this again.  The pictures are absolutely horrible, and I PROMISE these bars taste so much better than my crummy pictures would make you think.  Check it out.

TGIF! Am I right?

--- 2 ---

Both boys had basketball try outs this week. The draft was Thursday night, so we should find out tonight or tomorrow who their coaches are. This will be
my oldest boy's first year to play basketball. I'm excited for him. Several people asked him to play this year, so I hope he has a good time and learns a lot. Hopefully he'll get a good coach who will teach him. I'm looking forward to practices, and I'll have to remember to keep my stinking mouth shut. Grrrr.....

One thing I'm NOT looking forward to is buying two new pair of basketball shoes.

What the Heck Wednesday

I can't believe it's already Wednesday again.  The time just seems to pass by at warp speed.  I don't have much this week.

Have any of you heard this new song, "What Does the Fox Say?"

7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---
This has been a rough week for me. We just can't seem to get everyone in our household well at the same time. This time, it's me again. Things had been going fairly well for me, but I made the mistake of saying that. In essence, I tempted fate.

I was finally starting to feel completely recovered from the respiratory virus that hit our home a month or so ago.  Friday afternoon I had what I thought was an asthma attack, so I used my inhaler.  It didn't seem to help.  A few hours later, I used the inhaler again.

What the Heck Wednesday

As you know Halloween is right around the corner.  My oldest, who recently turned 13, has decided that he's too old to dress up for Halloween.  I'm not real sure how I feel about that.  My youngest, being only 10, obviously still wants to dress up.  He wants to dress up as a baseball player, no surprise there.

7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---

My youngest son was allergy tested this week. Thankfully he doesn't have many allergies, just molds and three specific trees - red cedar, sweet gum and oaks. Unfortunately, we have 3 acres of oak trees and there is basically an oak forrest all around us. Molds? Of course, those are found everywhere. So, we plan to start immunotherapy for him. We'll go in for the first of three sets of shots on Monday. Then after the third set of shots next Friday, we'll continue the injections at home. I'll give him his shots at first, but I'm sure we'll eventually get to a point where he will be able to do them himself with supervision. That makes two of us in the household who are taking allergy shots. Hopefully, we'll see fewer sick days for him. I haven't really thought about it, but so far it seems that I've had fewer sinus infections since I started immunotherapy. However, we are fast approaching another bad time of year for me - when leaves start falling and rotting on the ground... UGH! So, I guess we'll see. It will probably be a bad time for Gabe too - rotting, moldy oak leaves. Yay!!

--- 2 ---

A new On the Border opened in our area, and I can't wait to try it. When Ben was on a travelling men's softball team, there were two restaurants we always had to go to when we were in Dallas. On the Border was one of those restaurants. Several years ago they opened one in West Little Rock, but it just didn't seem to provide all the goodness I remembered from our Dallas trips. I'm hoping this one won't disappoint. Maybe it was the company we were with in Dallas which provided such good memories and not necessarily the food. Hmmm..... We sure miss that crew, for sure!

--- 3 ---

I'm going to whine just a little now. I was up a majority of the night with "stomach issues." I still don't feel well. But, I go ahead and shower and get ready for work. One of the last things I do, is my hair. That's when I discovered that my hair dryer was dead. DEAD! We reset the GFCI, no luck. We took the dryer to the kitchen and tried it there. Nada! So, I asked Ben to get the dryer out of his truck that he uses for work. It's one of my old ones that he uses to speed the thawing process when an HVAC or appliance has frozen up. That one didn't work either. Seriously?? Thankfully my in-laws live close, so I packed up and went to their house to finish getting ready. Then I pull in to work to discover that our service elevator broke down some time during the night, I'm assuming while the cleaning crew was there, in other words before 10p.m. We were expecting a semi truck full of furniture to arrive at 8a.m., and we had no functional service elevator!! Even though there is a guard on-site 24/7, and they obviously knew about both the inoperable service elevator and the furniture truck coming, they didn't connect the dots. UGH!! So, what was supposed to be a 2-hour furniture delivery turned into much, much longer. Meanwhile other trades were also getting backed up waiting for their turn on the dock.
Can I get a TGIF??

--- 4 ---

Teens and phones, well electronics in general. I'm kinda digging my oldest son's new found interest in "socializing." Now, when he doesn't do what I've asked him to do, all I have to do is say, "bring me your phone" or PSV or iPad or whatever it is he's focused on at the moment, and he sure gets his behind in gear. Let me tell you!

--- 5 ---

Deodorant crystals. I may have mentioned this before. Have any of you tried them? They are supposedly all natural and will last approximately a year. You wet either your arm pits or the end of the crystal and apply as you would a regular deodorant stick. There's no gummy, sticky mess. No worrying about getting white deodorant all over your clothes. I've been using it for about a week now. So far, so good. Of course, it's now fall, so it's not a true test of a deodorant - that would be an Arkansas summer. But, I really like it so far. I think my husband has been using it too, and thankfully I haven't noticed any odor. So, I think this might be a winner. If you've used this product, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

--- 6 ---

That's all I have for today. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

What the Heck Wednesday

Recently temperatures have been chilly in the mornings here.  So, we're pulling out the long pants, long sleeves, etc.  I don't think I've worn any of them yet, but we're getting ready for the really cold temps when those warmer clothes will be required.  For my family of hot-natured people, it has to be pretty darned chilly to put away those shorts, I'm talking highs of upper 50s and lower 60s.  Ironically when I lived in Miami, temps in the upper 50s and lower 60s caused a large number of people to pull out their furs and leather.  Seriously.

I know ankle boots, booties, shoeties, whatever you want to call them, are popular again this year.  I already have a couple of pair of black that I can wear, but I've been looking for a brown pair.  (I'd also like to find a pair a nice brown boots, but that's another story for another time.)  Since I hate shopping where do I turn?

What the Heck Wednesday

We have another sick child in the house this week.  Now it's Garrett, bless his heart.  A few weeks ago he came down with the same respiratory virus that Gabe and I both had.  Remember after two weeks, just as Gabe was starting to feel better, he developed a sinus infection?  Yup, same story with Garrett.  Only the sinus infection struck him down when we were at Fall Nationals in Southaven, MS, this past weekend.   Saturday afternoon, he commented about being tired.  Then Saturday night as the Elite were playing, a friend asked, "What's wrong with Garrett?"  I turned to see him lying on the top row of the bleachers.

The next morning he complained of being really cold..... and it was all downhill from there.

7 Quick Takes Friday

Sorry I've been MIA.  It's been a rough couple of weeks.  I came down with what is known around here as "the crud."  I prefer to call it the plague.  Either way, it wasn't fun - still isn't actually.  Although I'm definitely on the mend, this weekend marks two full weeks that I've been battling whatever has befallen me.  It's the plague, I tell ya.

What the Heck Wednesday

Today is mine and my husband's 14th wedding anniversary, so in light of that, I decided to talk about some anniversary gift ideas. Ben and I aren't exchanging gifts, at least not to my knowledge. Actually today is just like any other with work, baseball practice, etc. We'll exchange cards, I'm sure, but other than that, meh..... Romantic, huh? Yeah. Well, that's just how it goes sometimes. We may try to go out for dinner alone this weekend, but Gabe is playing ball, so that probably won't happen either. Oh well.... it is what it is.

Uh oh..... Guess what day it is!  Guess what day IT is!  I love that commercial.  If you have no idea what I'm talking about, take a peek.

That camel looks a little rough, much like most of my WTHW features.......

7 Quick Takes Friday

Surprise, surprise. I'm having issues with my post again. I feel sure it's a computer issue, but... So, we'll just muddle through. I have no idea what formatting, if any, will survive when I hit "publish."  I apologize if it's all jacked up.

TGIF! Am I right? Not only is it Friday, but it's the beginning of a long weekend. Woo hoo!! I don't know about you all, but I need a break!

What the Heck Wednesday

My oldest son will be 13 very soon, and there has plenty of birthday talk -  you know, party, gifts, cake, etc.  He even put in a request for a certain type of cake because he only likes one kind of icing.  So, the thought of ordering his cake piqued my curiosity as to what kind of cake screw ups might be out there.

Not much to say this Friday.

Kali Hardig continues to improve and wrote her name for the first time since being admitted to the hospital in July.  Please continue to pray for this young lady.

What the Heck Wednesday

It's been another crazy week, but crazy good.  We're finalizing the back to school preparations and trying to get back in the swing of things.

We had planned a float trip this coming weekend, but we've had so much rain lately, that's been cancelled.  The rivers aren't safe at this time.  So, bummer..... we'll have to think of something to do with the boys on their last weekend before school starts.

7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---
For those of you who don't know about the stress we were going through with my oldest son, you can read about it here. I'm happy to report that neither my son nor any of the teen group he was with became ill. Thanks be to God!! I want to thank everyone for their prayers and ask that you continue to pray for Kali Hardig. She is doing better each and every day but still has a long road ahead of her. Thankfully she has managed to beat the odds thus far, and I hope and pray she continues to do so.

Since I have no idea how long I have until my blogger crashes again, let's get this show on the road, shall we?

7 Quick Takes Friday

UGH!!  My blogger is acting up again.  There's no telling what this post will look like.
My oldest son was recently exposed to something very scary.  You can read about it here.
He actually gave us a scare Wednesday night when found him asleep at 5:30, and he didn't awaken until 6:30 the next morning.

What the Heck Wednesday

It seems that I say this every week, but this past week really has been a crazy one.   You may (or may not) have heard the news story about a sweet 12-year old girl here in Arkansas who contracted parasitic meningitis or primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

What the Heck Wednesday

Guess whose birthday it is?  Yup, I'm 29.  Again.  The day started off with the smell of breakfast cooking.  I thought, yum!  Garrett is cooking me breakfast.  Nope.  He cooked only for himself.  As usual.  The day continued as it normally does.  My boys didn't even wish me a happy birthday, not even Ben.  **sniff**

Oh well, the day isn't over yet.... moving on.

7 Quick Takes Friday

I'm really glad to be home!  I love travelling, but I don't sleep well in strange beds.  I usually come home from vacation exhausted from lack of sleep, then I have to work like a fiend to get caught up with everything at work and home.  UGH
!  Thank goodness I finally learned to go to a laundry mat and wash most of our clothes before we come home - that helps a great deal!

What the Heck Wednesday.... on Thursday

I'm baaaaack!  Do I still have any followers?  I'm sorry I've been absent for a bit.  Last week our Easton Elite 9 Major team was playing in the Baseball Nationals, and I'll update on that soon.  Yesterday I tried to post, but blogger was being temperamental for some reason.  I still don't know what's wrong, but I'm using a different computer.  So, to use a Southern expression, there's more than one way to skin a cat.
Things have been crazy busy since our return from Nationals.  But, I'm swimming along.  To quote Dory, "just keep swimming."  That's all one can do, right?  Just keep swimming.

What the Heck Wednesday - NOT!

I'm sorry I have no WTHW post today.  Things are hectic as we're preparing for our AR Easton Elite 9 Major team to travel to Kentucky for baseball Nationals!

Please keep these young boys and our families in your prayers as we travel.

Thank you!

On the 15th, I traded my 2011 Honda Pilot for a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country Minivan.  So far, Im loving it.  I know it's a mini van, and I probably just lost a few cool points.  But let's face it, I have champagne taste on a beer budget.

What the Heck Wednesday

Recently, I was car shopping.  I already had a fairly new car, a 2011 Honda Pilot.  It's a nice car, but I wasn't really happy with it.  Nor was I happy with the large car payment we were paying.  So, in an effort to find a vehicle I was happier with and reduce our car payment, I went shopping.

7 Quick Takes Friday

7 quick takes sm1 7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 221)

--- 1 ---
Last weekend was a long, exhausting weekend for us.  The AR Easton Elite hosted a Cal Ripkin baseball tournament to raise money to help off-set our travel expenses for the World Series.  It's alot of work for us parents, but  it's so worth it.  Unfortunately, I got extremely sunburned in spite of wearing sunscreen.  My feet are also killing me, even though I wore tennis shoes both days.  But, I'll eventually bounce back.  We raised a great deal of money to help our boys, and that's what it's all about.

What the Heck Wednesday

I'm still worn out from the baseball tournament we hosted this past weekend, and I can't really think of a way to open this post.  So, let's just get started shall we?  Oh, wait!!  I know.  One great thing about hosting a baseball tournament, is that it offers some prime people watching opportunities.

Key Lime Pie

As I mentioned in my Friday Quick Takes, I love to cook when I have time.  Unfortunately, it's seldom that I have much spare time.  I work full time and also handle all of the doctor's appointments, baseball practices, lessons, etc.  That means I'm constantly on the go.  Therefore, I'm always looking for new quick & easy recipes, and I found a few recipes recently that I decided to try.

Sopapilla Cheesecake

Finding a quick and easy recipe that will satisfy the sweet tooth of each member in my household is not always an easy task, especially since one of my sons doesn't like chocolate.  **gasp!**  I know!  That just doesn't seem natural does it?  But it's true.  My oldest son really doesn't care for chocolate.  Thankfully, tonight I was able to find something that everyone loved

What the Heck Wednesday

On the way to work, I saw an antique Mini car.  This one had a "GB" sticker on the back, and the driver was actually on the right-hand side of the car.  It reminded me of an episode of Mr. Bean that I saw many years ago.

Converting my iPhone from AT&T to Straight Talk has been a real pain in the backside.  Thankfully, I converted mine first before I converted anyone elses, so I can work out the bugs.  I've had issues sending/receiving MMS.  So, I'm not able to get the group messages sent to the team nor any pictures.  This has been a pain for me and the coaches as they have to make sure to send me my own private message about practice or game times, uniform choices, etc.  I think I might possibly have figured out how to fix this, and will hopefully have time to try to fix it soon.  I'm praying.....  I think if you have something other than an iPhone, you probably wouldn't have a problem converting your phone.  Obviously, if you purchase one of their phones....  no issues.

On the plus side, the service has been great.

How to Clean Your Drip Pans

While reading through one of my favorite blog link parties, I came across this post from Talitha at Love, Pomegranate House that gave a tip on cleaning your stove top drip pans.  Since I've tried just about everything but sand blasting, I was skeptical.  So, naturally, I had to test her tip.

What the Heck Wednesday

Sorry I was AWOL Friday.  I had a post drafted and had intended to schedule it, but time got away from me and we were travelling Friday for a baseball tournament.

I'm deep in research for an upcoming project or two that I'm planning.  So, I'll hopefully have something for you on those projects in a few weeks.  These projects have been inspired by the new leather sofa and flat screen TV we purchased.  So, I was curious what kind of furniture items I could find.  Let's take a look:

I have to say it's a good thing this table is back up to the wall.  I'd hate to see the other view.  Ahhhh!
This chair reminds me of the Muxinex commercials with the phlegm characters.  Yup, one of them just sat on a chair and started oozing over.  Blech!!
I know people that love frogs, but I think a chair like this is just a tad bizarre.  Just a tad.....

I've actually envisioned Mariah Carey putting her hand to her forehead and collapsing on this bed.  I know she's a butterfuly nut and wears that ugly butterfly ring all of the time.

Did this chair ever freak anyone else out?
What the heck?  I understand this is a DIY, but why a monster chair?  Is this the naughty chair for time outs?  Haha!  I bet if a kid had to spend time out in that chair, they'd straighten up real fast, huh?  Now that I think about it, there might be some genius behind that chair afterall.

I think everyone I know who was alive in the 70s has either had or knows someone who had some form of this sofa in their home at one time.  In fact, I think I know someone who may still have something like this.  To each his own, I suppose.

Okay, I've been on a real turquoise kick here lately, so I actually think this chair isn't too bad, except for the cactus.  I'd probably change the arms a bit too - maybe get rid of the inner part of the arm that makes it look like a wagon wheel.
How many of you had a grandpa who practically lived in a recliner like this?  It was a comfy chair, but eventually there would be the duct tape on the arm to cover the rips in the crappy naugahyde.  A friend and I had a running joke wondering how many baby naugas had to die for that chair.

Aaaah!!!  This makes me think of that scene in Toy Story when all the dismembered toys in Sid's room come to life and start moving around.
This bubble couch does not look comforable.  My brain must be on TV right now, because this makes me think about those scrubbing bubbles commercials.

This is what I imagine Satan's throne looks like.  Freaky!

OMG..... well folks, my wit seems to have escaped me today, and I'm struggling (in case you couldn't tell).  So rather than torture you any longer.  I'll be moooooving along.

Happy Hump Day, ya'll.

What the Heck Wednesday - Happy Anniversary!

What the heck......  Can you believe today is the one year anniversary of this blog?  No?  Me neither!  It has grown by leaps and bounds, and I now have a multitude of readers.  By multitude, I mean more than three - Woo hoo!  I'm a regular celebrity.  Not really, but I can dream, can't I?

In honor of the anniversary, I thought I'd take a look back over the past year and revisit five or six of the most popular posts.

7 Quick Takes Friday

--- 1 ---
Oh my goodness!  I am so glad it's finally Friday.  It's been an eventful week, and I need my weekend to get here PDQ!
--- 2 ---
Saturday we drove an hour from home to check out a leather sofa that I found for sale online.  When I spoke to the lady on the phone, she said her husband had purchased the sofa to put in a cabin in Montana, but he died before that happened.  I thought, "yeah, right."  I just knew it would be like the car salesman that tells you the car only had one owner who happened to be an elderly widow who only drove the car to church on Sundays.  So, I tried not to get my hopes up.  Well.... it was beautiful, and we brought it home that day.  Saturday was a misty day, but we were prepared with numerous blankets and tarps.  We managed to avoid the rain until we were 1/4 mile from home, then the bottom fell out, as we say here in the South.  Although the sofa was covered with tarps, etc., Ben didn't want to leave it on the trailer out in the rain.  He wanted to at least get it up onto our covered deck.  So, he and I tried to wrestle that thing onto the deck but since we removed the feet, I couldn't get my fingers under the couch, and it was difficult to get a good grip with the tarps.  Thankfully, my husband's twin happened to drive by and saw us struggling (by us, I mean me), and he stopped to help Ben.  Bless his heart!  He got totally soaked, and fell trying to back up the steps onto the deck.  the couch fell on him of course.  See?  No good deed goes unpunished.  He said he limped for two days after that.  Thank you, Bennett!!
--- 3 ---
One day earlier in the week, I forgot which day, my youngest son went on a field trip to a crystal mine (is mine the right word?  Maybe field?) about an hour from home.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go, but the mother of one of his friends was able to go.  She sent me several great pictures, and she also took Gabe home after school so he and her son could play.  When I stopped to pick him up, she went to her car to get the backpack Gabe took on the trip, and she could barely lift the thing.  Apparently he found so many great crystals that he wanted to keep, his backpack weighed about 40 pounds.  UGH!  Now he's begging me to wash them in the bathtub.  Ummm... no.  I think we'll wash those outside, thank you.  I told him he could put them in a flower bed.

We found out Wednesday that one of our Elite players quit.  The little boy didn't want to quit, but his dad made the decision.  The player is a sweet, talented little boy that we all really care about, but his dad has some issues.  Several of our boys, mine included, have played on a team with this little boy since they were seven years old, and we have had issues with this same parent before.  In fact, twice before, but the coaches wanted to give him one more chance.....  We will all miss that sweet little boy, and his older brother, but daddy?....   As my great grandma would say, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.  And that's all I got to say 'bout dat. (Said in my most Forrest Gump-like voice possible.)

Yesterday, at the end of the day, the downtown high-rise building I manage  had a fire alarm.  Even though I like to visit with big, hunky firemen it had been a really long day, and I was ready to go home.  But, since we had no idea what was going on, it's always best to have the fire department check it out.

Thankfully it was the end of the day, and a vast majority of the building was empty.  I still had to tell the remaining employees a minimum of 537 times, "No! You cannot come back in yet.  I know it's almost time to go home, but we have to wait until we have an all-clear."  I felt like I was stuck in a grown-up version of "are we there yet??"  I was ready to go home too people.

What the Heck Wednesday

With swimsuit weather fast approaching, I thought I might explore unusual swimwear for the post today, but OH.MY.GOODNESS!  I don't think my eyes will ever recover.  Sooooo, I quickly nixed that idea.  However, I will show you a couple of swimwear photos I came across.

Now, my intent is not to offend anyone here.  At least not with this specific picture, but I cannot imagine wearing this to the beach.  I know some people that probably should be covered from head to toe, myself included, but I think I would die of heat stroke or possibly drown from the weight of all of the fabric.  Just saying.  I love the color though.  By the way, it's called a burkini.

Ahhhhh..... pair these with a burkini for overall sun protection.  Can you imagine the crazy tan lines they get?
Ummm.... Why?  Exactly why does a swim suit need a collar?  And let's not even talk about the fabric choices.  Sad, really.

Let's move on to two of my favorite things.... Shoes and handbags.  Yay!!

Why do these make me think about an armadillo?  These are Fendi, and quite costly, but also quite ugly, in my opinion.
This little apple wristlet is from Kate Spade.  Although, cute and whimsical, it's not really something I would carry as a grown woman.  Something like this is better suited for a little girl...but not for what this cost!

Mother's Day is just around the corner.  Have you thought about what you're going to do for your mother, mother in law, grandmother, etc?  Mother's Day around our house usually means that Ben will let me sleep a little longer, and he might fix breakfast for the family, then we'll go to church and spend the rest of the day making the rounds to visit mothers and grandmothers.  So, this year I've decided to purchase my own Mother's Day gift.... A new coffee maker....  Check it!

Ummm...... Ben doesn't know about this yet, so shhhh.......  But, trust me, I didn't pay retail for it.

Since we're talking about Mother's Day gifts, let's explore some items that should be avoided when giving gifts.  Now there is some murky water here, folks.  So, tread carefully.  There are some women who might actually request one of these items.  For example, one year I specifically asked for a motion-activated  stainless steel garbage can.  Not the most romantic gift I've ever gotten from hubby, but it was something I wanted and really didn't want to buy for myself.  He knew exactly what I wanted, because he was with me when I found it.  So, yeah, he scored points for that gift.  Remember that.  Did the recipient specifically ask for that exact item?  That's key.

I think I may have mentioned that one Christmas I received a box of dark brown hair color.  I'm blond.  So, yeah....  Grooming products as a whole, deodorant, shampoo, hair color, razors, etc., should be avoided.  The exceptions would be a lovely scented hand lotion or bath set accompanied by a very plush terry bath robe.  mmmmm......

One time when I managed apartment communities (sounds oddly similar to "One time at band camp......"), I received an unusual gift from a tenant.  It was lace panties, nail polish and Daisy disposable razors.  Yup.  The man was off his meds, AGAIN.  So, I promptly called his elderly father and told him that I needed to talk to him.  When the father arrived at my office, I explained that his son had given me a gift, and I  handed dear ole Dad the gift.  His response to the package contents?  "Oh my word......." and I think his knees buckled a little.

Okay, I got side-tracked, sorry.  I could probably write a book about things I've encountered in my years of property management.  There's never a dull day, that's for sure.  Again, it bears repeating.... grooming products are NOT a good idea.

Cleaning products - another no no!  Unless, with that particular cleaning product comes a blood oath that the recipient will never, ever, EVER have to use that product again because YOU will provide that service forever and ever, AMEN.  Then, and only then, would that cleaning product be considered a fabulous gift.  By the way, the same applies to cooking utensils, kitchen appliances, etc.

Exercise videos, Wii Fit, gym memberships - unless she specifically asked for these, by giving her one of these gifts, you're basically saying she's fat.  In fact, you know what?  Forget it!  Even if she ASKED for one of these items, just don't.  Better yet, give her a visa-type gift card that she can use anywhere.  If she really, really wanted one of these things, she can use that gift card to pay for it.  Better to be safe than dead.  Speaking of Wii Fit, I have one for sale, anyone interested?  Barely used.  LOL!

A pet!  OMG!  Who doesn't love a cute, cuddly puppy??  However, it's never a good idea to purchase a pet for someone else.  Obviously there are exceptions.  I love our two dogs, but I'm the one that said I wanted a dog, I chose them, and I'm their primary care giver.  Someone else might consider a pet just one more thing on an already overloaded plate.  Instead of a giving a pet as a gift, consider giving a donation to an animal shelter in their name.

Breakfast in bed is a great idea provided you have cleaned the kitchen prior to her emerging from the bedroom.  If she's served a yummy breakfast in bed only to be met with a destroyed kitchen and a sink full of dirty dishes, well..... it's an epic FAIL!!  There shouldn't even be a hint that anyone has been in the kitchen, except for the fresh pot of coffee awaiting her.

I think I've done my public service for the day.  So, I'm going to end here.

Happy Hump Day, ya'll
